Accessibility
Access is part of the work.
We aim to make DeafU useful across different communication methods, devices, and assistive technologies.
What we are building toward
Our design target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. This is a target, not a claim that every page has passed a full accessibility audit.
- Text content remains available without playing video.
- Navigation and controls should work with a keyboard and visible focus.
- Pages use headings and links that help people navigate with assistive technology.
- Videos with speech should have reviewed captions; descriptive transcripts should include important visual information.
- We plan to test with Deaf, hard of hearing, and DeafBlind people and improve the site based on their feedback.
How videos load
DeafU does not load a YouTube player until you choose to watch a video. Each video has a direct YouTube link. The six planned video slots currently reuse one demo clip for playback testing; it is not topic guidance and does not yet have a DeafU descriptive transcript. Written guidance remains on the site. Topic-specific videos should have descriptive transcripts before they replace the test clip.
The homepage has a separate muted video background. You can pause it beside the homepage buttons. It stays on a still image if your device requests reduced motion or data saving, and it pauses when the page is hidden or the banner leaves view. The written homepage text carries the information.
